SIMPLE protocol for Instant Messaging and Presence
SIMPLE ( SIP for Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions) is a protocol framework that aims at promoting and standardizing the use of SIP for the transfer of presence information and instant messages over IP networks by re-using the addressing scheme, user location discovery and routing flexibility of SIP networks.

Reusing SIP’s agility for presence allows dissociating the concept of presence from specific applications such as Instant Messaging and enables the use presence information in any other communications application.

The concept of leveraging SIP’s versatility for delivering presence and instant messaging services is validated by its adoption by communications and computer industry giants such as Microsoft. The embedded instant messaging and presence functionalities in the CentralTouch IP contact centre are based on the SIMPLE protocol and can interoperate with third party applications that support the cpidf_xml content type. The SIMPLE protocol is used by CentralTouch to deliver the integrated services of Voice, IM, Remote Monitoring and presence.
